Tracking Cell Phones

Background:  E911 Development

Note: All phones not having e911 location service will be completely phased out by the end of this year(2008). There are still phones being made which do not have e911 locater software built into them and the phone company that turns service on for it pays a hefty fine. E911 service means the phone sends out feedback that uses cell towers to triangulate the location when a 911 call is made.

Now many phones have a GPS chip and GPS technology. The GPS information is not limited to 911 calls. Some cell services allow you to send this information to other users.  So if I decide to let a third party know my location — a cab company, for instance — does that mean that law enforcement can retrieve it from them without a warrant? What if I let my family know where I am? What if I post my movements to my Facebook feed but only allow my contacts to observe them? For that matter, what if a firm writes a program and observes that some of its company-issued cell phones are regularly being carried into Narcotics Anonymous meetings and distributes that information internally? All interesting questions to consider.

Can you track a cell phone yourself?

There is a service that is quite reasonable that you can track your own cell phone.  AccuTracking software turns your Motorola iDEN cell phones, RIM BlackBerry phones, or Windows Mobile PocketPC phones carried by Nextel, Boost Mobile, AT&T(Cingular), SouthernLINC or Telus MIKE (Canada) into a GPS tracking device. The AccuTracking online GPS cell phone tracking service lets you see real-time locations, speed, and headings of your children/family members or cars/vehicles, and receive email or SMS alerts when they move across the designated areas or exceeds speed limit. AccuTracking is your ultimate low cost real-time vehicle locator, child locator

What is it?

AccuTracking is an online GPS tracking service using your cell phones. It helps you monitor the current location of your mobile client.

The definition of GPS from the Merriam-Webster dictionary is “a navigational system using satellite signals to fix the location of a receiver on or above the earth’s surface”. GPS tracking can be used for locating children, vehicle or other targets. Cell phone tracking uses either communication network or GPS to locate a cellular phone. AccuTracking uses GPS.

How It Works

The AccuTracking system includes two parts:
1. The AccuTracking client software installed on your cell phone.
2. The web site (http://www.accutracking.com) that provides phone location mapping and other trip data monitoring online.

The phone turns on the phone, runs the AccuTracking client software, the program will then send the phone location periodically to the server (the sending interval is customizable on the phone). You can then view the phone location and other collected data (speed, heading, and phone status) online. All tracking data are kept for 30 days on the server so you can view the tracking history for up to 30 days back. The key is you have to have a data plan. In other words, you need the phone to have internet access - that is how it can send the information to the system so you can track it.

Does Changing Phone Number or SIMM Card Effect the Tracking?

Each phone is identified by "Tracker ID" only. Changing phone number or SIM card wouldn't affect tracking.

However, when changing phone number or SIM card, you should make sure the data plan still activated for the phone. Without a data plan AccuTracking won't work.

Can I use it Covertly on a Phone?

The short answer: NOT REALLY on Motorola phones (by Nextel & Boost Mobile); YES on BlackBerry phones. AccuTracking can be set to auto start on phone power-up, and to run in the background. However, when AccuTracking starts, the AccuTracking screen will show up on the phone screen and wait for user to set it to background.

When AccuTracking runs in background, it takes a few key stokes to find out the background application. Therefore it's not totally covert.

This is primarily because the phone firmware behaves this way - it'll show the application screen when it starts up, and show background applications.

Password Protection

There is a feature "password protection" in AccuTracking. When enabled, the password is required when performing the following actions:

1) Start AccuTracking. If the password is incorrect, the program won't show the main screen. Note the program is still running normally in this case, only the main screen is not showing up.

2) Bring AccuTracking from background to foreground. If the password is incorrect, the program main screen won't show up.

Note however, the user can still brutally kill any running application, even shut off the phone.

Covert on BlackBerry

However, on BlackBerry, AccuTracking can be set totally hidden from the phone screen, and start covertly in the background when phone powers up. To use this version on your BlackBerry, just download and install the "covert" version from your BlackBerry browser.

Tracking the phone from other phones

You can track from any phone with a web browser. It can be a PDA, BlackBerry, Pocket PC (PPC, SmartPhone), Palm, or any WAP 1.1 compatible phone from any carrier (Cingular, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon...). Just open the browser on the phone and go to the AccuTracking Mobile site.

Uses:

Even with one phone, you can still take advantage of the GPS Tracking service from AccuTracking for tracking your child, monitoring family member trips, or improving personal safety.

Personal - You may want to do children tracking.  When your child goes with a friend or on a school sponsored trip, you can have access to their location.  If you are using AccuTracking and your child ends up "missing"  you can know where they are -at least their phone, just by checking online. They don't have to answer the phone. It may give you peace and no need to call the police.

Vehicle Tracking

Vehicle security and car crime prevention. Use AccuTracking as your low cost GPS vehicle tracking device: know whereabouts of your vehicle 24/7. Get alerts when it moves across designated zones.

Vehicle owners, parents, delivery, transportation, trucking, mobile service companies, private investigators and many others can all benefit from AccuTracking software and service. Knowing where your vehicles, employees and physical assets are in real-time on your desktop computer is a valuable management and cost-control tool.

Improved driver and content security
Improved driver performance
Maximized vehicle utilization
Proof of delivery

Limitations:

You might think a phone can use AccuTracking as long as it claims to have "GPS". This is not the case because some phones' GPS feature is only accessible by the carrier or under particular circumstances (for example, when dialing 911). AccuTracking can only work on phones with GPS that are accessible by third-party applications. In US, this pretty much limits it down to Motorola iDEN phones, RIM Blackberry phones, and Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC phones.

What is the Easiest Way to Get Started?

The easiest way is to get the AccuTracking Starter Kit. It includes the prepaid phone with software already installed.
